Inside, Outside, ME
Italian and English poems
These poems were written during periods of emotional turmoil, instinctively listening, and feeling everything happening around me, while illness lived inside me.
cuore a cuore
The place you don't know
In every particle of my body lay an unimaginable pain.
It screams voraciously
echoing loudly within my cells.
While I don't possess the strength to offer it my voice,
I give it the gift of silence,
keeping it clenched in my windpipe for years on end.
It seizes my soul,
shackling itself tightly within me,
heart to heart,
mixing burning pain with clear, fervent hope.
The loss of the world allows me to dive inside the universe hidden beneath my skin.
I find myself digging through the raw viscera containing the ferocity of my being:
naked, vulnerable.
Balancing the absence of external stimuli with the abyss of burning knowledge born of great torment,
gives birth to the self marked by an infernal hunger.
Tutto
Vogliamo tutto io e quella testa riccia castana mingherlina.
Le cicale sono forti, quanto quella voce,
Quanto quella voglia nostra.
All
I find myself smoking in the quiet courtyard of a hospital in Pavia.
There I am, barefoot, curled up in my wheelchair, drawing smoke in and slowly letting it go.
A little boy wanders out: he wears bright blue glasses and is remarkably tall for someone so young.
He says to his grandmother: “I want everything, I want all of this, I want absolutely everything.”
I overhear without meaning to and I’m struck by how familiar and fiercely hungry those little cries sound.
Wanting everything is necessary, it keeps us alive and tethered to the great current of life. The less one has the more one longs for, that’s simply how it is.
It is the same for me, now that there is so little left.
I wish everyone, for all the years still to come, this relentless capacity to desire, the kind that pulls you onward and burns quietly within you.
We want everything that curly haired boy and I.
The cicadas are loud, as loud as his voice,
as loud as that longing we share.
